Elmer Ray Downing was born on September 21, 1920, in Blockton, Iowa, the son of John Wesley and Eva Downing. He graduated from Cheyenne Central High School in 1938 and began working for the Wyoming Eagle and Tribune newspaper in Cheyenne. Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to Worland, Wyoming, where he began work with the Northern Wyoming Daily News.
In 1942, he joined the United States Air Force and proudly served during World War II with the Mediterranean Air Transport Service in Italy and Africa. His job was to schedule carrier flights that moved troops and supplies during the war effort. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his Service.
After his war service, he returned to Worland and became the Circulation Manager for the Daily News. During the 46 years he was with the newspaper, he was Advertising Manager, General Manager, Interim Publisher and Associate Publisher. He retired in 1986, and then returned to work part-time from 1988-1990.
In 1946, the met and married Tresslyn Price in Cheyenne and together they had two daughters and one son.
Elmer thoroughly enjoyed volunteering with Worland Fire Department for 20 years. He served on the Chamber of Commerce Board and a Retail Committee of the Chamber; was a Charter member and past president of the Worland Rotary Club; and he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Worland for 60 years. He loved fishing and hunting in the Big Horn mountains and was very proud to drive the 20-1 truck license plate for Washakie County bequeathed to him by his very dear friend Bob Smith.
Elmer was preceded in death by his father and mother, a sister, and one great-grandchild.
Elmer is survived by his wife of 66 years, a daughter Dixie Muirhead and her husband of Casper, a daughter Debra Wickham and her husband of Boise, Idaho, and a son, John R. Downing and his wife of Candler, North Carolina, as well as seven grandchildren, four great grandsons, two great granddaughters, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Elmer was preceded in death by his father and mother, a sister, and one great-grandchild.
Cremation has taken place and, at his request. Internment in Oregon Trail Veteran Cemetery will be at a later date.
