Eileen Foley Mitchum, 96, of Casper, died Monday June 29, 2009, at Poplar Living Center, Casper, Wyoming.
Eileen was born June 16, 1913 in rural Custer County, near Merna Nebraska, to Patrick and Bridget (Rourke) Foley.
Eileen's parents farmed in Nebraska near Merna, then Broken Bow; until moving to Wyoming in 1917 to a Campbell County Homestead of 640 acres near Gillette, Wyoming. Eileen's mother, Bridget, died in 1918, when Eileen was only 5 years old.
Eileen, and brothers Francis and Joe were raised by grandparents (Edward and Margarite Foley) in Broken Bow, Nebraska.
Eileen attended grade school and high school in Broken Bow. She graduated from high school in 1930 at the age of 16. After high school she returned to the Gillette area homestead to live with her father Patrick, and brothers Francis and Joe. She worked on the farm that summer (1930), then went back to school in Gillette where she earned a teaching certificate.
Eileen taught in rural schools in Campbell County for two years, during which, she purchased a Model A Ford for $100.00. She then decided not to teach again. She sold the car to a friend for $100.00, and then enrolled in Business College in Sheridan, Wyoming where she earned a certificate in 1933. She then worked in Gillette, Wyoming for the WPA (Work Progress Administration) then the Campbell County Courthouse for the County Clerk and Treasurer. In 1935, Eileen began work with the Wyoming Rural Rehabilitation Corporation which became the FHA (Farmers Home Administration). She worked for the FHA for 41 plus years in Gillette, Casper, Cheyenne, Torrington and back to Casper.
Eileen married Russell A. Mitchum, an employee for Pacific Fruit Express.
Eileen and Russ retired finally settling down in Casper, Wyoming. They traveled to Europe and the Middle East occasionally; and spent winters in Mesa, Arizona for eleven years where they owned a house. They continued to live in Casper on Sun Drive until the death of Russ, November 16, 1996. Eileen was a member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Casper.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and her husband.
Eileen is survived by her son, Douglas and wife Marcella of Laramie; daughters, Colleen and husband Jim Facinelli of Cody; Sharon and husband Ken Tiglas of Manistique, Michigan, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors also include longtime loving neighbors Bert and Nita Knaus of Casper,
"Like a sister" Bernice Welch of Denver and Marge and Bob Sullivan of Cheyenne.
Funeral Liturgy will be 10:30 a.m.Tuesday July 7, 2009 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Casper, with Father August Koeune celebrant, burial will follow at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens, in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
