Edith Howie

December 3, 1924 — December 6, 2018

Flora Edith Howie

At her request, no services are planned at this time for Flora Edith Howie of Casper, who passed away Thursday, December 6th, 2018, just 3 days after her 94th Birthday. Cremation has taken place, and the family will gather to place her ashes at Memorial Gardens sometime in the Spring.

Edith was born to Archie Cox and Leola Temple Cox, December 3rd, 1924 in Baldwin, Illinois. After graduating from high school in 1942, she applied for nurse's training, but was turned down because she was only 17. She went to work in a furnace company that had been converted to a defense plant for World War II. She soon met her husband, Herb, and they were married on Christmas Eve, in 1944 in Tyler, Texas, where Herb was stationed while in the army.

When the war ended, they moved to Casper, where Herb was hired at the Standard Oil Refinery, and Edith worked for Stanolind Oil Co. before becoming a full time homemaker when the first of her two children was born. She was involved in Girl Scouts, was a 4-H Leader, and was instrumental in starting the Blue Envelope Throat Culture program. She loved hunting and fishing with her family.

When her children were in high school, Edith became a Counseling Office secretary at Dean Morgan Junior High School. After Herb retired in 1977, they spent winters in Yuma, Arizona. While there she discovered a love of painting, Pine needle Basket making, and many other crafts. She was also an expert quilter.

When Herb passed away in 1995, Edith began attending the Casper Senior Center, and was active in the Meadowlarks singing group, RSVP, and was on the Senior Board. She was one of the first women to join the Golden K Kiwanis Club, was on that board twice, and she also volunteered for the Eager Readers program that read to elementary children in Casper schools.

"Edie" was a very social person. She loved sports, especially baseball, but mostly it was everything her children or grandchildren were involved in. She attended as many events as she could for all of them. She was a member of Red Hats, and she also enjoyed music, and loved to dance. With Edith, you knew exactly where you stood, because she would tell you, but she loved her friends and family with her whole heart.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband and one sister, Vera Lee Hutton. She is survived by her sister Barbara Ramsay of Claremore OK; two children, daughter Kathie Hove of Gillette; son Gerald Howie (Dana) of Casper; grandchildren Heather Wilcox (Andy), of Missoula MT; Bobbie Pratt (Scott), of Durant, OK; Matthew Hove of Oregon; Jennifer Howie (Asa Waterman), of Casper; and Craig Howie (Jennifer) of Longmont, CO. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, and her much loved West Highland Terrier, Angel.

In lieu of flowers, Edith is requesting donations be made to Central Wyoming Senior Services, RSVP or Wyoming Dementia Care. All three are housed at the Casper Senior Center.
