EARL E. REED

Earl E. Reed, formerly of Casper, passed away at the age of 90 on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 in Centennial, CO.

He was born in Wheatland to Owen Herbert Reed and Grace Riddle-Evert on August 18, 1927. Earl graduated from high school in Loveland, CO in 1945. There he played football and basketball. He also ran the mile for the track team, setting a school record.

Immediately after graduation, he enlisted as a seaman in the United States Navy where he served aboard the minesweeper USS Seer in the South China Sea. He spent Christmas 1945 in Shanghai, China.

After his military service, Earl attended the Colorado State College of Education in Greeley where he played football. He later transferred to the University of Wyoming in Laramie and earned a B.S. in business administration in 1954.

Earl married the late Joyce Bentsen on December 22, 1952 at Rapid City, South Dakota. He took employment with the Ohio Oil Company (later Marathon Oil) and spent his career as a petroleum landman. The couple lived in Bismarck, ND and Sidney, NE before settling in Casper in 1962.

Earl was a longtime member of the Wyoming Association of Petroleum Landmen, the Casper Petroleum Club, and the Elks Club. He was an avid reader and Green Bay Packers fan. After his retirement, he worked as an enumerator for the 1990 U.S. census. He enjoyed meeting with the Marathon retiree's group, fishing in Wyoming's lakes and streams, and traveling to historic sites. For many years, he and Joyce spent the winter months near the ocean at Myrtle Beach, SC.

Earl moved to Centennial, CO in 2010 to be closer to his family.

Earl is survived by three children: Teri Hjelmstad (Anthony) of Highlands Ranch, CO; William Reed (Cheryl) of Chantilly, VA; and Kathleen Carrier (John) of Green Bay, WI. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Andrew Hjelmstad (Rebecca), Peter Hjelmstad (Megan), Marisa Schenk (Nathaniel), Chelsea Reed, Lara Carrier, and Benjamin Carrier, and by six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce; his siblings Hazel, Owen, Robert, Harold, and Donald; a son James; and a grandson Tyler Reed.

The family requests that any donations be made to either the Special Olympics or the Friends of the Wyoming Life Resource Center.

Interment will take place at the Highland Cemetery in Casper on Thursday, November 2 at 2:00 p.m.
