Donald began career at John Deere in 1953, starting with humble beginnings as a mechanic. In 1958 he began his career in the oil field, he worked his way up the ranks from roughneck to tool pusher and ultimately to superintendent. His commitment to excellence in his profession earned him the respect and admiration of his peers.
He graduated high school in 1951 and carried with him the values emphasized during those formative years—values that resonated throughout his personal and professional life. Known affectionately by the nickname "Handy-Man," Donald possessed an exceptional talent for carpentry and machinery, often applying his skills to various projects that showcased his creativity and practicality.
A man of many interests, Donald loved to participate in activities that brought joy and excitement to his life. He enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing, water skiing, and spending time at the lake. He was a dedicated supporter of local sports, always seen cheering on the Wyoming football and basketball teams, as well as Casper College games. His love for sports extended to his family; he cherished every moment spent watching games and playing catch outside with his son, Corey.
Donald shared an unbreakable bond with his family. He was incredibly proud of his children, Corey and Shelly, not only for their accomplishments but also for witnessing them both graduate. His role as a grandfather was equally cherished, attending every game and event of his grandchildren Sydni, Chase, and Abbi, encouraging them amid their endeavors. His caring, supportive nature would shine through in all his interactions, making him a source of strength for his family.
In reflecting upon Donald's character, one cannot forget his humor and easygoing personality, traits that endeared him to many. He was often the life of the party and had the unique ability to make others feel at ease. And while he was a figure of support to his family, he also had a soft spot for his dog, Pepsi, who brought him much happiness.
Donald was predeceased by his son, Michael Handeland, and his wife, Arlis Handeland. He is survived by his son, Corey Handeland, his daughter, Shelly Handeland, and his cherished grandchildren, Sydni Handeland, Chase Handeland, and Abbi Handeland.
