Don attended Sussex Elementary School and graduated from Sussex High School in 1947 and Menomonee Falls High School in 1949. He spent his childhood surrounded by his many siblings and the family's 2 pet black bear cubs. He was a key player of the Sussex Land O' Lakes Rivers basketball team winning the championship for the 1950-51 season. He left Sussex in December 1951 to serve his country in the U.S. Army in Korea. He moved to the Barber Apts. in Glenrock after his property was destroyed by fire in 2005. Don worked for Midwest Motors Express as a truck driver for many years retiring in 2005. He also spent many years cutting wood in the forests of Wyoming with a close family friend.

Don enjoyed fishing the Platte River, ice fishing on Glendo and Boysen Reservoirs, deer and duck hunting, watching basketball and football and spending time with his kids and grandkids. He was known for his devotion to his family, his great sense of humor and as the "go to guy" to fix or build anything his family or friends needed.
