CASPER -- Funeral services for Delos E. "Dee" Nelson will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at Newcomer Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Davis of the Southern Baptist Church of Kaycee officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United Veterans Council and the Wyoming National Guard. A reception will be held at the V.F.W. Post 10677 immediately following the services. An additional memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at the Grace Mission Baptist Church in Kaycee.
He died Jan. 17, 2008, at Wyoming Medical Center of heart failure.
He was born June 23, 1920, in Lemmon, S.D., to Elmer and Kathryn (Clarkson) Nelson.
At a young age he moved with his mother to the Midwest/Edgerton area and later to the Kaycee area where he attended school.. At age 16, he entered the C.C. Camp at Midwest before enlisting with the U.S. Marines at age 18. He served in WWII in the South Pacific on the Somoan Islands.
He was honorably discharged and returned to Wyoming where he met Evelyn Burridge. They were married in San Diego, Calif., on Oct. 14, 1945. They later divorced.
He was a bartender at the Casper Elk's Club for several years as well as being employed by Wardrobe Cleaners. In the early 1970's he discovered his love for baking and attended culinary schools in Chicago. He was employed by the Ramada Inn of Casper as a pastry chef.
In 1983, he renewed his friendship with his childhood sweetheart, Anita Lund. They were married in 1984. They spent 16 wonderful years together on the ranch outside of Kaycee until her death May 9, 2000. He then returned to Casper where he made his home.
He was an avid sports fan. He especially enjoyed witnessing his sons many accomplishments as a Special Olympic athlete. He loved to play cards, camping and fishing, riding his horse and time spent on the ranch. He loved the company of family and friends. He will be remembered for his quick wit and fancy dancing feet.
He was a Lifetime Member of V.F.W. Casper Mustang Post 10677.
He is survived by his brother, Robert Leiser of Mountain View, Calif.; daughters, Nancy Cone and husband of Orange County, Calif., Donna Dee Carshon and husband of Star Valley Ranch, Becky Root and husband of Mills; son, Bobby Nelson of Casper; step-sons, Fred Lund and wife of Glenrock and Kevin Lund and wife of Casper; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Hazel.
