I had a wonderful life! I was born in Wichita on June 26, 1929 to Floyd and Dorothy, great parents, blessed with two beautiful sisters, Mary Louise and Florence Jane and three marvelous Aunts. Growing up my Dad would take me to his oil wells; I even saw one blow out! I went to the Etchen School of Marksmanship and we'd hunt upland game. In high school I lettered in tennis and football – (I was fast!) and at KU, swimming and tennis. At an out of town swim meet, I met Pat; three years later we married and had 60 very happy years together.
In 1951, I went into the Navy Air Cadet Program where I received my commission, my wings and served two tours of duty in Japan and Alaska respectively. On a patrol over the Bering Sea in June of 1955, we were shot down by three Russian Migs. We crashed landed in the tundra on St. Lawrence Island in the middle of nowhere and were rescued by the indigenous Aleuts… everyone survived. Having my own plane, I enjoyed flying into my late 70's which kept me in sync with my Navy roots.
After the Navy, I became a landman, a nomadic lifestyle as much as a profession. I initially went to work for Amoco in Denver, then Bismarck and eventually landed in Casper as an independent. The mixture of freedom and financial terror made this a career unsuitable for the faint of heart, but I did it right up to the end.
We loved Casper and enjoyed the mountains, lakes, golf courses- all of it. We hunted, fished, camped, golfed, swam, and skied…the race trips coaching my kids, the best of times. In the early 1970's, I was instrumental in bring Ducks Unlimited to Casper.
Pat and I have five amazing children, Michael (Dalene, Chris, and Jon) , Cary (Gene, Matthew, and Mackenzie), Suzy (Shane, Shane, and Leah), Peter (Kathy, Cary, Jess, Trent and Laura) and David (Christy, Nicole, Heidi and Ian).
I truly had a wonderful life!
Dave
