Darryl Joe Doan, age 82, of Casper, Wyoming, passed away October 18, 2022, from natural causes.
Darryl, who went by Joe, was born in Galesburg, Illinois, on December 6, 1939. He entered the Navy in 1958 and toured the Mediterranean, enjoying his time in Italy and Greece.
Of all that he loved, at the top of his list were his children, his son-in-laws, and his grandchildren, to whom he was known as Grandpa Dinosaur. He unapologetically celebrated his family. He was a cheerleader, supporter, and facilitator of joy. Quick-witted, funny, and a great conversationalist, people loved him immediately.
Joe loved books and art, completed jigsaw puzzles of pictures from Kandinsky and Grimshaw, and was a fixer of broken things. Saturdays were for donuts and Hearts and shooting the moon.
His passions were many: genealogy, recording elaborate family trees and imagining the stories that accompanied each branch; archeology and rocks and minerals, using his time to volunteer at the Tate Geological Museum and spending a lifetime gathering, hunting, cataloging, and labeling beautiful specimens from all over the world; music, allowing himself to be moved to tears as he waved his arms, conducting the invisible opera pit of Carmen or Turendot from his couch; and Scotland, roaming the hills of the Highlands, drinking in The Gauldry Arms with poets and friends, and living in Strathpeffer at The Richmond Hotel. His heart was completely at home there.
Joe Doan is survived by his children, Cara (Gabriel) Rodriguez of Casper, WY; Emily (Chad) Jackson of Billings, MT; his grandchildren, Marcus, Cai, Ava, Ellie, and Isaac; his brother, David (Akiko) Doan of Rock Falls, IL; and his sister, Shirley Greene of Amherst, VA, along with many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Doris and Gerald, his step-father, Ray, his sister, Nelda, and two nephews. There will be a private memorial service for family and close friends on November 25.
