Curtis D. Johnson

October 6, 1946 — August 21, 2022

Curtis Daniel Johnson, Curt, of Douglas, WY, passed away Sunday, August 21, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY from a sudden and brief illness. He was 75 years old.

Curt was born October 6, 1946, at Gordon, Nebraska to Robert Leslie Johnson (Bob) and his wife Marie Doris Hathorn. He was the 3rd of 3 children. The family ranched in the sandhills area near Merriman, Nebraska for many years. He attended High School at Gordon, Nebr., and joined the Army National Guard of Nebraska in 1966; he was stationed for a time at Ft. Ord, CA. He married Janice Miller in 1967 and the family moved to Gillette, WY in 1968, then settled in Douglas, WY in 1976 after having lived about 4 years in Platteville, CO. In 1989 he married Sandra (Grooms) Keller, originally from Valentine, NE. They continued to reside in Douglas.

Curt was an avid photographer, his scenery shots were outstanding. He was also a very good sketch artist, though he seldom practiced the art in later years. He loved hunting, shooting, and camping. He also enjoyed welding, often creating items of his own design. He had taken up gold dredging in recent years, until failing health curtailed these hobbies; he then turned to video gaming and gun collecting. Over the course of his life he had worked in the oil field, as a trapper, a trucker hauling drill rigs for Exeter Drilling, as a truck mechanic for Jim's Water Service in Douglas and as a plant mechanic for the Inexco gas processing plant north of Douglas. Most recently he worked as an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad out of Bill, WY, retiring in Oct. of 2012.

Curt was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Lois Denison of Evanston, WY. He leaves behind his wife Sandy of Douglas, his children Tammy Beard of Ft. Collins, CO, and his son Joshua of Douglas, his step-children Kari Wlodarczyk of Rapid City, S.D., Amy Gibson of Douglas, and Amanda Hernandez and husband Richard of Casper, WY; he has one sibling, his brother Jerry Johnson and wife Karen of Alliance, NE; 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and several nieces.

No formal services will be held, but there will be an informal gathering to remember and honor Curt on Saturday, September 24, 1-4 pm, at the Kings Portion Compassion Center, 809 S 9th Street in Douglas. His ashes will be interred at the Douglas Park Cemetery. Newcomers Funeral Home in Casper will handle the arrangements.
