Chester "Chet" Joel Stephens passed away June 8, 2014 at home surrounded by family.
Chet was born in Casper, WY November 1, 1921 to Edward and Arletta Stephens. He spent his childhood in Casper. The family then moved to a ranch south of Glenrock on Deer Creek when he was twelve. He went to the country school and then Glenrock Parkerton High School where he participated in football and FFA.
At the age of 21 he was drafted into the Army during World War II. He was in the third wave of the European Theater landing on Omaha Beach July 7, 1944. Chet was awarded the bronze star for heroism of delivering ammunition to his stranded comrades.
After he got out of the Army he bought his uncle's ranch on Deer Creek and married his high school sweetheart, Laura Mae Smith, raising cattle and sheep. They completed their family with Larry, Rita and Phyllis. He was still ranching at the time of his death. Laura passed away in 1996 and he continued living on the ranch. Chet was instrumental in starting the Deer Creek Grazing Association which has been in existence for the past 49 years. He was active in 4-H for many years helping build the Deer Creek Community Hall, also Farm Bureau and the Soil Conservation. Along with ranching he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening especially raising potatoes and calling square dances. One of his favorite sayings and philosophies of life was "it will all come out in the wash if you wash long enough."
He is survived by a son Lawrance (Connie) Stephens of Glenrock, two daughters Rita (Art) Andrew and Phyllis (Jack) Peterson both of Evansville; five grandchildren Misty, Jamie (Fred), Carl, Lana (Mike) and Matt (Abby); six great-grandchildren; one brother Daniel Stephens of Casper.
He was preceeded in death by his wife, an infant son, his parents, one sister Helen Dotson, three brothers William Stephens, Wesley Stephens and Melvin Stephens.
Services will be held in Glenrock, Saturday June 14, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Glenrock First Southern Baptist Chapel.
Donations may be made to the Glenrock Senior Citizens Center.
