OBITUARY FOR C.P. ABRASSART
Chester P.(Chet) Abrassart, age 87, long time Casper resident, passed away on Jan. 14, 2010 at Central Wyoming Hospice Home. He was born on Aprill7, 1922, in Vincennes, Indiana, the son of Herman 1. and Novenia (Johnston) Abrassart. He was preceeded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers. He was a descendent of pioneer Vincennes, Indiana families, including General G.W. Johnston, pioneer lawyer, legislator, former Postmaster and founder of the Vincennes Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Abrassart was a Consulting Petroleum Geologist in Casper, where he had resided since 1960. Prior to entering the consulting field, he was District Geologist for Sinclair Oil & Gas Company, in charge of that
company's Montana operations. He was also a former businessman, having owned the Alpine Gift Haus, from 1965 until 1987.
He was a graduate of Vincennes University (Indiana); and a recipient of that institution's Distinguished Alumni Citation in 1965. He also attended Indiana University; and held B.A. and M.S. degrees from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He was a past member of the University of Colorado Geology Foundation Board of Directors.
Mr. Abrassart was the author of numerous professional geology papers, as a contributor to the Wyoming Geological Association and Billings, Montana Geological Society Oil and Gas Field Symposiums; as well, as the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists' Guidebook to the Geology of Northwest Colorado, 1955. He was also the Chairman and Editor of the first Montana Oil and Gas Fields Symposium (1958), published by the Billings Geological Society.
He was a Certified Wyoming Professional Geologist; and, a Certified member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He was also a past member of the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists, and the Yellowstone-Big Horn Research Association.
He served in World War II in Europe, in the 20th Armored Division;
in the armored infantry; and, was a past member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Abrassart is a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church Parish; and, the Knights of Columbus. In recent years, he
was a contributor of Perspective Editorials to the Casper Star-Tribune newspaper. .
Mr. Abrassart is survived by sister-in-Iaws Ila Rose and Mae Abrassart of Vincennes, Indiana and numerous nieces and nephews, including Dr.
Joseph Lavaux, of Estes Park, Colorado.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday Jan. 25, 2010, 10:00 AM with Father Kevin Koch as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions, 319 S. Wilson, Casper, WY 82601. Newcomer Funeral Home in Charge of arrangements.
