Caryl L. Spargur, 89, of Casper, died Thursday, May 6, 2021 at his home.
Caryl Leon Spargur was born Oct 6th, 1931 on his grandparent's farm called "Cedar Pines" in the south east corner of Nebraska in Gage county. His parents were Caryl Halbert Spargur and Alice Beryl Willey. His mother went into labor unexpectedly while she was staying at her parents' farm when his father was working as a telegrapher/dispatcher for the Burlington railroad. About 1 ½ months after Caryl was born, he and his mother went to live with his father who was working at a small railroad station in Lanham Nebraska. The little family lived in many places in Nebraska as his father was transferred farther down the line during the great depression. They sometimes lived in small apartments above the train depots. They eventually ended up in Casper, Wyoming when Caryl Leon was about 12 years old where the family finally stayed.
There he attended McKinley Elementary School, and Natrona County High School. He played football and excelled in swimming and running track setting several state records which went unbeaten for some time. During his Senior year in High School, the Blizzard of '49 cancelled the state track meet in which he would have competed. He had many stories about pranks he and his pals were involved in while in high school. Those stories entertained the family for many years.
After high school graduation, he worked building tunnels in the Wind River Canyon.
He enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 going to basics in Biloxi Mississippi, then on to Korea. While there he operated heavy equipment building many airstrips and ammo revetments. He said he was glad that he never had to fire upon anyone. After his tour in Korea, he finished up his enlistment at Kingman Arizona.
When he came back to Casper, he worked at several jobs including driving a city bus, working at the Standard Refinery, and working in the Gas Hills, operating heavy equipment in the Uranium mines there. In 1958 he started working for the Fire Department in the City of Casper, retiring in 1978 as a Captain. There were many funny stories he told about working with the fireman which were enjoyed every time we heard them. He also worked in Casper on his days off the fire department as a heavy equipment operator for several companies around town including working for Jim McIntosh and Harry Long, eventually owning his own business "Backhoe Service."
Years later while in his 80s he and several of his high school buddies met for lunch one day a week. Sometime after retirement from the Fire Department, some of the firemen would go to lunch once a week as well.
He married Caroline E. Wise on the 5th of October 1956 in the First Church of the Nazarene in Casper Wyoming. The following year in August 1957 to the surprise of everyone including the doctor, Caroline gave birth to twin daughters; Celynda Lea (Linda) and Cynthia Lou (Cindy.) The following year in October 1958, their son, Clinton Dale (Clint) was born, making their family complete.
Caryl enjoyed hunting and fishing all over the state of Wyoming. He also enjoyed spending a lot of time staying at and working on the Sullivan Ranch west of Arminto Wyoming where his daughter, Linda lived with her husband, Joe Sullivan and their 3 children.
He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene doing many things for the church. He had many friends there and loved attending church on Sunday. He enjoyed studying and marking his Bible.
Caryl is survived by 2 children; Cindy Blevins and her husband Tom, and Clint Spargur and his wife Barbara all of Casper; 11 Grandchildren, Candi Daniels [Chris], Shane Sullivan [Chelsey], and Joey Sullivan [Jennifer], Moneika Sweeny, Roy Blevins [Traci], Leah Blevins, Tony Blevins [Natalie], Heather Broderick [Tyler], Amber Madsen [Jorgen], Cassaundra Spargur, Patrick Calkin [Tracy] and Elizabeth Zitterkopf [Johnny]; 30 great- grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren along with his sister Louise Garvin [Rodney] of Powell Wyoming, and many nieces and nephews.
