Burt Durnell, 80, of Casper passed away on November 1, 2001 at Wyoming Medical Center, from complications of a broken hip.
He was born in Carthage, Mo., his father, Finis, delivered him. At age two his mother, Gertrude, was sent to a TB (tuberculosis) infirmary for two years. Burt and his brother, Jack, were sent to a catholic sanctuary while their father traveled looking for work.
He moved with his family to Worland, Wyoming in 1938 at age of 7 and then to Casper, Wyoming in 1941. He attended Park Elementary school in Casper and graduated in from NCHS in 1949. Burt was drafted into the Army in 1952 and served in Korea for two years; he was awarded a Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars as well as a United Nations Service Medal.
Following his discharge Burt met Betty in 1954, and was married on New Year's Eve, 1954 at the First Christian Church. They had a double wedding with Betty's sister, Shirley and her husband Bob Downs. Burt worked for Kistler Tent and Awning in Casper for four years and then with the United States Postal Service in 1955. He retired after 40 years of service in 1994.
Burt was an active member of the Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon from 1994 until 2006. He was also a volunteer at the Wyoming Medical Center mail room from 1996 until 1998. Burt was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Burt worked for ten years building his home for his wife and five children; he enjoyed his family life and was a great husband and father. Burt spent a lot of time on carpentry jobs for the seniors in Casper and was always available with a helping hand to anyone that needed it. Burt was a great provider for his family, by sometimes holding down three jobs to support them through their college years.
Burt is survived by; his wife of 56 years, Betty of Casper; his five children; Lori Huseas (Lloyd) of Casper, Lynn Green (Dennis) of Sheridan, Lane Durnell (Becky) of Casper, Lark Durnell of Moorcroft, and Lisa Welsh (Chris) of Littleton, CO; as well as nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by; his parents, a brother, sister, and niece.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: A Memorial Service, with military honors, for Burt will be conducted on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Church of Christ, 2344 E. 2nd St, Casper, WY 82609 with Ken Nealeigh officiating.
