He was born in Comanche, Oklahoma. During the dust bowl, his family moved to the Las Cruces, New Mexico area where he attended school. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a 59 year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and traveled the western states as a construction superintendent. In Casper, he oversaw the construction of numerous buildings such as the Crude Oil Company, Smith Energy, Kerr McGee, and the fifth floor of the Hall of Justice.
In his spare time, he taught people how to build low cost solar collectors and greenhouses.
He was a master craftsman and loved to wood-work. He made many pieces of furniture for family and friends. He served as a Literacy Volunteer for several years in Casper. He taught several adults to read and recruited many to get their high school diplomas. He helped children learn to read. In 1994 he received the Wyoming Governor's Action award for volunteer work.
In 1975 he married Marianne North in Center, Colorado. He was devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Bettina Caro, of Las Cruces, NM, his son, William Shannon North and wife Erin of Seattle, WA, his sister Odessa Anderson of Las Cruces, NM, two grandchildren, Taylor North, Courtney Lezinski of Las Cruces NM, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Literacy Volunteers of Casper, care of the Casper College Foundation, or to the Central Wyoming Senior Services.
