Bernice M. Mason

December 12, 1930 — April 22, 2017

Bernice Marie Mason, née Kusser, a long time Casper, Wyoming resident passed away at her home, April 22, 2017, surrounded by her family.

Bernie, as she was known to her family and friends, was born on the family homestead in Hyde County, South Dakota, in the same room as her father, in December, 1930. After finishing Nursing school in Huron, South Dakota she married Francis Mason, who would be her lifelong companion, in November 1952. She had a great love for the state of Wyoming, having lived in Casper and Star Valley for over fifty years. She was devoted to her faith, the Catholic Church, especially St. Patrick's Church in Casper. She had a love of golfing, dancing, gardening and traveling with her husband; reportedly taking over the wheel when the road got too steep in the Redwoods of California.

Bernie was a dedicated nurse for Dr. James Maddy as well as many other notable Casper area physicians. She was proud of the compassionate care she provided to her patients working into her eighties. Bernie was a tireless volunteer for the Blue Envelope Health Fund for many years.

But above all, her passion was her husband, whose side she rarely left for 64 years of marriage, as well as her six children whom she repeatedly told, "no matter what, if you ever need anything, anytime, call me." Few things brought her greater joy than decorating the Christmas tree and setting up the nativity scene for the enjoyment of her seven grandchildren during the holidays. She will be remembered for the example she set for her children and grandchildren, the successes they attained and character imparted to them.

She is survived by her loving husband, Francis Mason of Casper. Her six children, Rick Mason and wife Betty, Dawn Findley-Groves, Janet McAteer and husband Pat, Russ Mason and wife Chong Park-Mason, Roger Mason, Lori Buckallew and husband Jeff. Her grandchildren, Jarod McAteer and wife Elizabeth Hankinson, Woody Groves, Trent McAteer and wife Elizabeth, Heath McAteer and fiancé Ashlynn Stevens, Halea McAteer, Justin Mason, Ahna Mason and her great grandson Jackson McAteer. All of whom were her greatest pride and accomplishments. Her life's work.

She is also survived by brothers, William Kusser and Philip Kusser; and sisters Norma Straight and Joan Hardwick. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Kusser; and her sister, Ramona Weber.
A rosary will be held at 7:00pm, Wednesday, April 26, Newcomer Funeral Home Chapel. A mass of celebration will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, April 27, St Patrick's Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Blue Envelope Health Fund, St Patrick's Parish or Central Wyoming Hospice.

"I always worked outside, as I would much rather ride horseback than cook and clean."
