In loving memory of Arthur "Art" Gums, 83; he departed this world, from Shephard of the Valley Healthcare Center, to enter Heaven in the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 20, 2017. He is and will be greatly missed.
Art was born in Streeter, North Dakota on Monday, April 2, 1934. Art was the second youngest of thirteen children. Beginning in 1951, at the young age of seventeen, Art served in the Air Force until 1954. In 1955, he married his sweetheart, Carol, in Anaconda, Montana. They welcomed their first child, Kathy. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Casper, Wyoming where they would make their home and welcome two more children, Steven and Teresa.
Art was always very active, a hard worker and a kind person.
Art was always very skilled at doing things on his own. He built his own conveyor belt to haul dirt that he dug to make his basement on Kit Carson. Steven and Teresa were charged with the task of helping move the dirt. He was able to learn the trade of welding on his own and was very skilled. Skilled enough to get Kathy out of a pinch when she learned without power steering turning isn't quite as easy. He also repaired and put in elevators.
He looked forward to elk hunting every year in Jackson, Wyoming. He enjoyed taking long walks, enjoyed fishing, watching the Broncos, sports, playing his guitar and traveling to Streeter, ND to celebrate Oktoberfest! Art retired from employment with Lincare at age 62 to travel with his Sweetheart.
When Art was ready to retire, he let everyone at Lincare know that he would be retired when he turned 62. As the news was delivered on April Fool's Day, all thought it was a fools' joke. It was no joke. Art did not return to work after that day. Once he was retired, Art's love for dying Easter eggs grew and he was very good at hiding eggs for his grandchildren to find every year. A love that is now a tradition that has been passed on.
Art is survived by his wife and forever Sweetheart, Carol, his three beloved children, Kathy (Bob) Taylor, Steven (Chris) Gums and Teresa (Mike) Coryell, by his seven grandchildren, Karen, Melissa, Laurie, Kiel, Kimberly, Corey and Kristi and six great-grandchildren, Hailey, Alden, Kaitlyn, Locke, Kacie and Kallie. Art was preceded to the gates of Heaven by his adored mother, father and all twelve of his brothers and sisters.
Please join the family at a Graveside Service for Art at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 29, 2017 at the Oregon Trail State Veteran's Cemetery in Evansville, Wyoming. Following the Committal and Military Honors Service there will be a Celebration of Art's Life held that day at 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Casper, Wyoming.
