Anne Trello DeWitt
Anne Trello DeWitt, 92, of Casper passed away Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Poplar Living Center. A Vigil will be held Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at Newcomer Funeral Home at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at 10:00 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Internment will follow in the Highland Cemetery.
Anne was born in Springfield, Illinois on July 8, 1917 to George T. and Mary (Butka) Trello, immigrants of Slovakia. She was the fourth of seven children and attended St. Aloysius Catholic School. In 1941, she moved to Chicago, to work at a defense plant, making walkie- talkies that were in demand. She was the first woman from Springfield to join the Women's Army Auxiliary Corp. She was stationed at Sheppard Field in Texas and she met and married James H. DeWitt of Parkerton, Wyoming, which was located between Casper and Glenrock. She was honorably discharged in 1943.
After their term of service ended they moved to Casper, Wyoming to raise their family of five where Anne was very active in the St. Anthony School PTA and Girl Scouts. In 1962, she and her husband Jim purchased the Hillcrest Water Company; they owned and operated it until his death in 1971. She sold the business to her family and son-in-law in 1974. She remained a mentor and consultant to Hillcrest Spring Water for many years.
Anne was very patriotic, proud to have served in the Women's Army Air Corp and was equally proud of her Slovakian heritage. She loved to share her traditions including her Slovakian recipes and amusing anecdotes.
Anne was active in the DW&C at the Knights of Columbus, Casper Elks DOES and the American Legion. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, painting and traveling friends and family.
Family was an important part of Anne's life. She, her sister Agnes and good friend and daughter's mother-in-law Mary Lou were the source of many family gatherings and loved to have an excuse to bring their families and friends together for any occasion.
She was preceded in death by her husband James H. DeWitt, her parents, all of her siblings, her daughter Margaret (Peggy) Martin, and her grandson Mathew DeWitt.
Survivors include her children of Casper, James H. (Jay) DeWitt, Kathy and her husband George E. (Bake) Baker, Jeanne and her husband Louis Prieto of San Diego, and Phillip N. (Guy) DeWitt. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to St. Anthony's Tri-Parish School fund in Casper, Wyoming or to the donor's choice.
