Andrew “Drew” Sandusky III passed away on Sunday October 6, 2024 at the age of 76. He was born August 20, 1948 in Burlington New Jersey to Louise and Andrew Sandusky Jr. Drew grew up obsessed with sports, Philly teams specifically. His dad and uncles were always taking him to baseball games at now historic stadiums to see even more historic players do their thing. You name the greatest players in the 50’s and 60’s and he had seen them play, probably numerous times! He graduated from high school and shortly after went into the Air Force. This was the Vietnam Era and he was stationed in both New Mexico and Texas as a data processing operator.
While in the service he met his wife, Mary Lou Crews and they began their life together in New Jersey. Once out of the service, Drew started work at PSEG where he made many lifelong friends. In 1982 PSEG went on strike and Mary convinced him to head out west where her family was from. Drew loved Wyoming, although he always missed the food back East. He had two children, Lea and Craig, who were the center of his world. He did many different jobs until he landed in the Traffic Department of the City of Casper and eventually retired from the City. Most of his time in Casper was spent coaching baseball and cheering on his kids in whatever they did. One of his proudest moments was watching Craig play baseball all the way up through the college level. Lea sang in the choir and he was at every concert, and only once did he wear headphones to listen to a Phillies playoff game instead of listening to the singing. He was always quick with a joke or a nickname and he also had many and was never seen without a ball cap. Whether he was Drewsky, Pepe, Sandy, Wimpy, or Swami D to you, he never met a stranger. He made a lifelong friend in a fellow Eagles fan from just casual conversation at the grocery store!
Although Drew had a very full social life, round about retirement time he became Pop Pop. His grandkids were born and they took the top spot in his priority list from moment one. Holden and Chase always had a safe spot to land with Pop Pop. Baseball and sports in general were loves that he nurtured and shared with the boys as well as his son-in-law, Brett. Many vacations planned around the Phillies or when Holden got older, his Travel Baseball tournaments. Retirement also gave him time to visit Craig in Minot, where he had his own space he crowned Kokomo. He loved the KW production of Newsies where Chase played Teddy Roosevelt and Drew spent lots of time getting pieces of the costume together. Pop Pop was a fixture at legion baseball games where in the last few summers he didn’t feel up to sitting in the stands. He would park in the outfield and we always knew he was there by the honking of his horn whenever something good happened in the game. He was a dog lover who was fiercely loyal to his pets.
He is survived by his children: Lea (Brett); Craig (Tami); his grandchildren Holden and Chase; his sister Jeanne and niece Lauren; the Crews girls-Evelyn, Carolyn, Jan, Eva, and Judy; and numerous cousins.
Services will be 1 PM Friday 10-18 at the Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery with a short reception to follow at CCT 949 N. Durbin Street. In honor of Drew’s love for Philly please feel free to wear Phillies or Eagles gear! In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Natrona County Meals on Wheels.
