Alice Dunlap-Ake passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018, at her home in Primrose Retirement Center in Casper, WY. Alice was born April 26, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio to Cecilia K. and George R. Bender. She was the first of three children.
Alice attended Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois before transferring to Ohio State University in Columbus, OH earning a BS in both English and education.
Alice married William (Bill) H. Dunlap in March 1948. After college and Bill's military service, they moved to Midland, TX where Bill was a geologist. During that time, Alice packed three kids and a household as Bill was transferred to the Canary Islands, New Zealand, Enid OK, and a final transfer to Casper, WY in 1969. They had three children: Charles, Scott, and Carla. Bill passed away from a tragic accident in February 1978.
Alice met John Ake through a mutual friend and found a new love. They married in December 1983. They enjoyed each other's company, and had fun traveling throughout the country.
Alice loved a good joke, had eternal optimism, a great smile, and a brilliant mind (longstanding member of Mensa). She loved people - her friends and family were always welcome at her home, and she had a soft spot for animals, exhibited by the many well-loved pets she had over the years. She was a gourmet cook, enjoyed needlepoint, and loved reading.
Alice learned taxes and subsequently bought and ran the H&R Block franchise in Casper. She worked there for over 30 years. She served on the boards of the Casper Humane Society, Meals-on-Wheels, and Burlington Northern Credit Union. She was a Bluebirds/Campfire Girls leader, and a member of Casper Geo Wives.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, brother George Bender, and her first husband William H. Dunlap.
Alice is survived by her husband, John W. Ake; children: Charles, Scott (Beverly), and Carla Dunlap (Chet); step-children: David (Kelly) and Katherine Ake (John); brother (Orris H. Bender and wife Doris); sister-in-laws (Norma Bender and Ruth Dunlap); and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 1:00pm at Newcomer Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 710 East Second Street, Casper, WY.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Casper Humane Society, the American Cancer Society, or charity of your choice.
