Lawrence "John" Myles, 84, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2024. John was born on March 22, 1940 in Bunkie, Louisiana, the son of Lawrence and Kathryn Myles. He was raised in the oilfield camps of Louisiana and Casper, Wyoming before moving to Williston, North Dakota in 1954. He graduated high school in Williston in 1958. Following graduation, he worked for his uncle's accounting firm in Seminole, Oklahoma. In 1961, he returned to North Dakota and began his studies at Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. John entered the United States Army on September 28, 1962. He was a Teletype Interceptor "radio man' serving in Fort Meade, Maryland and Herzo Base, Germany. He was honorably discharged on September 30, 1965. John returned home to Williston and continued his studies at MSU. In 1967, he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. While attending MSU, John was active with the Tao Kappa Epsilon Fraternity (TKE) and the Oil Field Physical Inventory Association. Also while attending MSU/ John met his first wife, Karen, and they were married on June 11, 1967. John followed in his father's footsteps and went to work for Amerada Hess Oil Company For the next 10 years, John and Karen lived in Texas and Kansas before settling in Dickinson, North Dakota. They had two daughters, Melissa and Jessica. The marriage ended in 1978 and shortly after John was transferred to Oklahoma. While John was working for Amerada Hess in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he met Stephanie Jones, who quickly became the love of his life. They were married on August 3, 1985 and John gained three bonus children — Mendi/ Joe, and Paulette. John continued to work in Tulsa until he was transferred to the Houston office in 1993. John worked for Amerada Hess for 42 years before retiring in 2009 to take care of Stephanie as she battled cancer. During his time with Amerada Hess, he worked all over the United States, on offshore oil rigs, in Libya, and Equatorial Guinea. In October 2014, John and Stephanie moved to Casper, Wyoming and lived with Melissa and her family. In December of that year; John lost his wife of 32 years to cancer. John continued to live with his daughter and her family until 2016 when he moved into Park Place Assisted Living, where he lived until August 2023. John then moved to Mountain Plaza Assisted Living and to Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in May 2024.
During his life, John was active with the Boy Scouts of America as a troop leader, the local trap shooting club in Dickinson, North Dakota, the Strawbridge Methodist Church in Kingwood Texas as the adult Sunday school teacher, and the Elks and Masonic Lodges. He enjoyed fishing/ice fishing and goose hunting with his father-in-law. John was an avid reader, he especially enjoyed reading about the Army Air Corps in World War ll. He loved watching westerns, especially Gunsmoke and any John Wayne movie. John and Stephanie spent many nights going to dinner followed by dancing and also seeing movies on the weekends. In the last few years of his life, John enjoyed going for drives around town or on the mountain, going to lunch and a movie, and spending time with his family
John is survived by his children — Melissa (Roger) Huschka, Casper, WY, Jessica Myles, Lafayette, CO, Mendi Jones, Pensacola, FL, Joe Jones, Broken Arrow, OK, and Paulette (Kurt) Newman, Denton, TX; 12 grandchildren - Justin (Jessica) Senchak, Devon Huschka, Shane (Maycie) Huschka, Jackson Schulz, Reagan Schulz Matthew Jones, Joshua Jones, Clayton Jones, Kristin (Cole) McBride, Sabrina Newman, Alyssa Newman, and Sebastian Newman; five great grandchildren - Keli Huschka, Charlee Huschka, Lincoln Huschka, Wolfe McBride, and Wylie McBride; sister Sandra Hoveskeland, Spokane, WA, niece Kory Buglione; and great nephew Andrew Buglione.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence "Larry" and Kathryn "Kate", his wife Stephanie, daughter-in-law Angela Jones, and great granddaughter Ava Huschka.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with a reception to follow. Inurnment will take place Monday, July 8 at the Veterans' Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Enhabit Home Health and Hospice or Mountain Plaza Assisted Living Memory Care Unit.
