Selma Marie Schneider

October 18, 1927 — May 13, 2024

Selma Marie Schneider left the physical realm for the spirit world on Monday, May 13, 2024. She died in Casper, Wyoming after a brief illness and has joined her ancestors. For fifty years, she was a Wyoming resident.

Born Selma Marie Gese on October 18,1927 in Fort Plain, New York, she was the daughter of Verna Johnston Gese and Charles Frederick Gese, Sr. Selma had three sisters, Carol, Lucille, and Beverly, and two brothers, Merton and Charles, Jr. Carol DeLuca of Babylon, New York is the surviving member of the Gese family.

Selma wed Ray Pence, Jr., US Navy World War II veteran, in 1947. The couple had four sons: Roger, of Grants Pass, Oregon; Jim, of Atlanta, Georgia; Norman, of Orlando, Florida; and Ray, of Lawrence, Kansas. Ray, Jr. died in 1991 and Jim died in 1992.

Late in 1993, Selma and Henry Gene Schneider, US Army Korean War veteran of Casper, Wyoming, married. Gene left us physically in 2001, but his wonderful bond with Selma endured.

An exemplary homemaker, Selma also held many jobs outside her home. Ray and Selma owned and ran Oil City Printers in Casper from 1977 to 1988.

She was a lover of music, of animals and nature, and of her fellow human beings. Throughout her long life, Selma was a devout Christian in thought and action. From 1977 to 2024 she belonged to the Christ United Methodist Church of Casper.

Her faith often found expression through writing. Selma’s poetry delighted her many readers. In addition to composing verse for occasions like Christmas, she wrote daily in her journals.

Family and friends knew Selma as a role model. Her wisdom, integrity, and empathy were all-encompassing. She was an avid singer and loved to knit, sew, and crochet with beauty.

Along with her surviving sons Roger Wieler, Norman, and Ray, Selma had five grandchildren: Sarah and James Pence of Lima, Peru; Anette Wieler of Hiram, Georgia; Jonathan Wieler of Atlanta, Georgia; and Joel Button of Las Vegas, Nevada.
