Richard Dean Marvel

March 11, 1951 — January 15, 2024

After a long and courageous battle with COPD, Rick Marvel passed away at his home on January 15, 2024. Rick was born in Denver, CO along with his twin sister, Jeannie, on March 11, 1951 to Wilbur and Ione (Gottfried) Marvel.

He attended Casper area schools, graduating from NCHS in 1969. After graduation, Rick and three other classmates enlisted in the Marine Corps where he was trained as a wireman. He returned from service and enrolled at Casper College. It was during this time he met and married Roberta Nation. They later divorced, remaining life-long friends.

After his graduation from Casper College they moved to Laramie where Rick studied petroleum engineering. Their first son Brian was born in Laramie on Rick's 27th birthday. Sons Eric and Cody were born later after their return to Casper.

Following graduation, Rick began his 33-year career at the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission as a petroleum engineer. Rick was a self-taught computer programmer, earning industry recognition for the creation and development of the original WOGCC website used to map oil and gas resources throughout the State of Wyoming. For this accomplishment, he received national recognition from Esri, the software company used to create the website.

Rick retired from the Commission nine years ago, and has been enjoying his family since then. His greatest joy was the additional of his seven grandkids. Those of us who knew Rick are keenly aware of his irreplaceable sense of humor and quick wit which he maintained to the end of his life. His was the gathering place for many family events where we could always count on his exceptional wittiness to entertain us.

Rick is survived by his ex-wife and beloved friend Roberta, their three sons, Brian, Eric (Marcy) and Cody (Hillary), his brothers Bob Wiley (Sharon) and Bill Marvel (Linda), his much-loved grandchildren; Quinn, Hope, Isaac, Brooklyn, Amelia, Ryder and Nicholas, his kindred spirit JJ, and many other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Michael, twin sister Jeannie and her husband Dan Garris. His family would like to thank those of you who have taken the time and made the effort to visit or call Rick these past few years as his debilitating illness progressed. He loved visiting with all of you.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Disabled Veterans.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 604 South Center Street, Casper, WY 82601.
